ARMIN CHENG's Liberation: A Revolution in Residential Design

Exploring the Unique Properties and Inspirations of the Award-Winning Design

The Liberation, a residential house designed by ARMIN CHENG, is a testament to innovative thinking and design. This article delves into the inspiration behind the design, its unique properties, and the technology used to realize it.

The Liberation is a residential house that breaks away from traditional design norms. Inspired by the changing angles and strengths of sunlight, ARMIN CHENG sought to create a space that brings active emotion and a fresh psychological feeling to its inhabitants. The design aims to extend the line of vision and offer a different perspective of the residential environment.

What sets the Liberation apart from other designs is its unique floor plan. Unlike traditional layouts, the floor plane is neither upright nor foursquare, and it is single-sided daylighting. The design team adopted a flexible partition approach to make the space open and bright. The small mezzanine in the kids' room and the long passageway outside the rooms were designed to create a free and joyful atmosphere.

The Liberation was realized through careful planning and execution. During the construction phase, all interior partition walls were adjusted, and the wall facing the lighting window was cancelled to widen the space and bring the sunlight deeper inside. The three rooms and the living room were moved backward by 150 cm to create a passageway. A mezzanine of 1.5m height was built in the kids' bedroom, providing a playful space for the children.

The design specifications of the Liberation are minimalistic yet functional. The main color is white, paired with warm wooden textures. The small mezzanine and the staircase were built using steel plates and cables embedded into the wall. The wall behind the couch in the living room is concave to capture the shadow of light at different times.

The Liberation is not just a residential house; it's an interactive space. The interior designer created a 150cm-wide "light corridor," allowing sunlight to penetrate deeper into the house. The elevated platform functions as a space for parents and children to relax and play, concealing huge drawers to expand the storage space of the house.

The Liberation is a testament to ARMIN CHENG's innovative thinking and design prowess. It's a residential house that challenges traditional design norms and offers a fresh, unique perspective on residential living. The design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
